The Music Department of Edgewood High School exists to prepare students in a meaningful way to understand, value, and enjoy music throughout their lives. In doing so, students will learn to appreciate the unique God-given talents each person possesses and the value of sharing those talents with others. The department is committed to nurturing the development of independent music-makers who can express themselves in multiple ways. Interaction with composers, professional musicians, and multiple guest conductors is a focus of the department.

Music has played an integral role in all recorded history and cultures. Humans continue to create and use music as a unique, powerful expression of their thoughts and feelings. In the development of the whole person, music contributes to the discipline of learning, fosters aesthetic sensitivity and culturally enriches each person’s life. Exposure to music of diverse cultures helps one understand and respect all peoples, past and present. Music education moves students from the fundamental levels of knowledge to the highest thinking skills. Students understand and experience music by identifying, listening, reading, scribing, performing, analyzing, creating and assessing. A wide variety of aesthetic and cognitive experiences are provided in music. Curricular courses allow for concentrated and intensive study of specific topics and interests in music.
